Project Overview

Studies show that young adults often feel unaccomplished with their own achievements due to excessive use of social media, prioritizing quantity over quality, resulting in increased anxiety and depression. Journaling has become a popular solution to this problem, allowing users to gain clarity and improve their mental health by writing down their thoughts.

The Problem

Although journaling is an effective method for regaining control, my research revealed that a significant number of users discontinue journaling due to the existing solutions being lengthy, repetitive, lacking visual appeal, and requiring users to independently revisit their entries for mental health reflection. These solutions also didn't leverage the power of habit loops to support users in developing consistent journaling habits.

The Design Challenge

How can we create a journaling solution that is not only more exciting and visually appealing but also leverages user information from past entries to facilitate reflection and provide actionable advice? Additionally, how can we use the habit loop to enhance users' journaling habits?

The Scope

The timeline for this project was tight. After taking the initiative to get to know everyone on the team we realized we had:

By understanding our team dynamics, we realized we had many advantages that could work well together.

The Solution

BudEJournal is a web app that streamlines the journaling process and utilizes the power of AI to generate insights from user entries, aiding users in improving their mental health. The habit loop is leveraged to help users establish consistent journaling habits.

[01 Research]

Research

Objective: To gain a better understanding of youth's journaling practices, I conducted a user interview with one participant due to time constraints of the project. Additionally, secondary research was conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issue.

Participant Criteria: The selected participant was a young adult who used social media and journaled intermittently to improve their mental health.

Method: User interview, secondary research.

Insights

1. Natural conversation

Users prefer to have natural prompts to better access their emotions while journalling.

2. Faster way to journal thoughts

Users want an option to be able to journal their thoughts faster, allowing them to spend more time on other activities.

3. Easier way to summarize thoughts

Users need an easier way to look back and summarize their feelings.

4. Insights for action

Users want insights so that they can take action for their mental health.

5. Track progress

Users need to track their progress to determine if their actions are improving their mental health.

Competitive Analysis

Assessing current solutions on the market for journalling.

Pro: filters to search for entries
Cons: no prompts to generate ideas

Pro: simple prompts and templates
Cons: hard to compare journal entries

Pro: created by experts for self help
Cons: no way to track progress

Customer Journey

Next Steps / Takeaways

This marked my first collaboration with developers during the design process, offering valuable insights beyond the design realm. Going forward, I would like to design it in an app version. This project allowed me to understand how developers work and approach projects. As a designer, I encountered the realization that not all developers grasp design thinking, requiring me to advocate and improve my communication skills to convey design concepts effectively. Recognizing the significance of communication and receiving feedback from developers empowered me to design with confidence. Additionally, I drew inspiration from my team members' enthusiasm about AI. Exploring its intricacies has provided me with a better understanding of how it can be seamlessly incorporated into products. Special thanks to Minh and Bailey for trusting me as a team member.
